October 9, 2016

I am watching the presidential debate as I write this. ‘Aging With Grace’ does not describe the candidates. Both do not exercise, by their own admission. I wonder about their health. Donald Trump sounds as though he has problems getting air. Hillary and Donald both have shapes that may indicate high cholesterol, high blood sugar and high blood pressure.

Now they are discussing health insurance. Before Obamacare, I used to be able to buy insurance for $137.00 a month. Now I pay $250.00 as an add-on to my husband’s insurance. If I had to purchase it on my own, as I did before Obamacare, I would pay over $400. Why? Because before my cost was based on my good health and I was rewarded for taking care of myself. Now, I pay for everyone else and their poor health. I know some people contract diseases even though they take care of themselves, but they are rare. They do not drive up the cost of health insurance. It is the over-eaters, the smokers, the alcoholics, the drug abusers, the couch potatoes. Television is the devil. I don’t know if this is true or not, but I heard that in China the cost of health insurance is based on each person’s waist circumference in relation to their height. People abuse the right to have free health care. People will not take care of their own health unless it benefits their pocket book.

By the way, do you know why some of the Medicare supplement companies offer the Silver Sneakers program? Because statistics show that seniors who exercise do not go to the doctor as much as seniors who do not exercise. And that saves the health insurance companies money. It is less expensive for them to pay the exercise instructors rather than pay the doctors.

Okay, I am going to bed. Doctors recommend not looking at a TV or computer screen for an hour before bedtime to allow the melatonin levels in our brains to go back to normal so we can sleep. But I don’t have to get up early tomorrow. I do have a full day tomorrow though, but I hope the fact that the banks and post offices are closed on Columbus Day does not mean that other places of business are closed.

Happy Columbus Day! What a funny holiday. May God bless your week.
