The new Lexington/Fayette County Senior Center is well under way and is scheduled for completion sometime this spring. I am so excited to see it and use it! I especially hope they have yoga classes in the evenings and on the weekends for younger seniors like myself who are still working during the day. The Senior Center is for people aged 60 and older who are able to function independently and who do not need assistance taking medication or using the restroom or finding their way around or with eating, etc. They do not communicate with the physicians of the people who attend the center. They do not do medical check ups or screenings, or take vital signs regularly. They do not monitor how much liquid attendees are consuming or encourage them to exercise or interact with others. It does not have medically trained people on staff. The senior center currently located on the corner of Alumni and Nicholasville Rd. used to have a program housed within the building called the Center for Creative Living that did all of the things mentioned above (they took care of people who were not able to function independently and who needed assistance taking medication or using the restroom or finding their way around or with eating, etc. They communicated with the physicians of the people who attended the center. They did medical check ups and screenings, and took vital signs regularly. They monitored how much liquid attendees were consuming and encouraged them to exercise and interact with others. It had medically trained people on staff.) The Center for Creative Living closed in June of 2011. We are just like the Center for Creative Living, only better! Our building is bigger than the space they had within the Senior Center and more convenient for family or other caregivers dropping off attendees. We conduct our programming as a health club for seniors, and we have spa treatments, a gym, lockers and beautiful art and furnishings. We also have a lovely garden with a koi pond. We do a lot of the fun activities that the Senior Center is known for, like art projects, learning opportunities, guest speakers and entertainers, parties and celebrations, dances and singing, but in a health promoting environment. Like the Center for Creative Living, we cost money and take Medicaid, long term care insurance and private pay. We are the least expensive and highest quality form of long term care. We are the best way to live a long and happy life. And we are less than a mile from the new Senior Center!
