I met an incredibly competent, experienced, and beautiful registered nurse this past week in answer to my job posting on Indeed.com. Wow, she would be such an asset to Aging With Grace +50. I hope she decides to come on board. She loved our concept but since it is so new to her, she is not sure how it would work for her. I asked her to just come in and hang out for a couple of days to see what it is like.
I have yet to meet a nurse who likes nursing homes as a way to care for our elderly loved ones if there is any other possible way for them to receive the care they need. Every nurse tells of the problems they have seen in nursing homes. Nurses that work in nursing homes are an incredible sort of person to be able to do what they do and remain sane. Their job is similar to being in combat constantly. Of course, some of them are on drugs or alcohol…some of them are abusive (especially neglect)….some of them don’t do a good job…
Every nurse or nurse aide that I have asked if they would like to be cared for in a nursing home someday answers “NO!” but they don’t have a good answer for how they will get the care they may need. Nurses know that over two thirds of the population that is over age 65 now will need some form and duration of long term care before they die. Everyone hopes they will be in the one third that does not need any help before they die. But we are not in control of that.
Of course, for those with medical and custodial needs, there is home care. I don’t like the idea of only home care for myself because of the problems I experienced with using that kind of care when I was responsible for my mother in law. 1) one is never sure if the caregiver is going to show up 2) one is never sure that the caregiver or substitute caregiver will do a good job 3) one is never sure that the caregiver or substitute caregiver is going to be honest and trustworthy 4) one is never sure that the caregiver or substitute caregiver will not be abusive. Aging With Grace +50 offers Help At Home services, and we always advocate for the installation of a surveillance system, so we have contracted with a reputable local company to do that for our members who would like help at home. We also only send people into the home after they have proved themselves worthy after working 6 months at the clubhouse. Help at home combined with clubhouse attendance is the ideal way for our members to get the care they need while experiencing the highest quality of life.
Remember, if you have any questions or concerns (financial, legal, health, etc.) about someone over age 50 (including yourself) please feel free to call us. We can help you or point you to someone who can help you. 859 539 2147
