February 16, 2015

Last week was super busy in a good way. Had a meeting with our newly hired marketer, Melissa Anthony, and I gave her a Wellness Map to share with hospital discharge planners and others who provide services to seniors.

We had our monthly meeting of the Bluegrass Continuity of Care Association at The Lafayette, where I spoke for twenty minutes on the advantages of adult day attendance.

We picked out columns to adorn the front and interior of the building after learning who would supply the best for the least.

Thursday was the Kentucky Association of Adult Day Services (KAAD) Legislative Day. We met at the Capitol Annex in Frankfort and listened to a speaker who promises to champion the cause of adult day centers as Jimmie Lee did previously. We also listened to our lobbyist and an update on the Medicaid regulations changes from our KAAD leader. Then we dispersed in hopes of gaining an audience with our representatives. I made an appointment in advance with our Senator (who is also an MD), Ralph Alvarado. He was extremely busy that morning but calmly listened to what I had to say and agreed that adult day centers are part of the answer to the problem of how to better care for the needs of the aging population.

I tried to get an appointment with James Kay, my House of Representatives representative, but no, the clerk at the desk told me, after I had waited from 10:00 am to 12:00 (minus 20 minutes when I met with Senator Alvarado), that he was unavailable. First she asked me what group I represented.

Then we met at the lobbyist’s office building for a lunch of sandwiches and potato salad and fruit. It was good to talk with fellow adult day center administrators and supporters.

On Valentine’s Day, my sweetheart and I did what we do best together: Get stuff done. We left our house at 8:30 to take our vehicles for service (new tires for me, and a tire rotation and oil change for him) and then we went shopping for furniture for The Club. We spent over $4,000 and worked until 6:00 that evening hauling the chairs we bought to our basement for storage . Then we cooked a steak with sauteed mushrooms and onions, baked potato and salad dinner together. It was a good day and a happy memory.

This week is beginning with a big snow storm, so I am not sure how much of the work we had planned will come to fruition. I have already had one event canceled.

My wish for you this week is for your health and safety. Spring is only 32 days away!frankfort

This is great news! When will you be open? Will you still be at the same location off Leestown?

  2. I think it is best to reach legislators when they are at home, not during session. When they are in session, meetings are rushed, they need to be in two places or more, and they don’t easily establish rapport with YOU. Keep on Mr. Kay and stay in front of Sen. Alvarado!
