The Present: November 10
Last week was a week of changes. Nolan, our two year old grandson, moved out of his father’s bedroom and into his brother’s bedroom, which caused many a sleepless night for all of us. He is sleeping better now, I am happy to report.
Lawrence and I began seeing a therapist/counselor to help us deal with our family challenges for the best outcomes possible.
Our son has a steady relationship with a woman friend.
Nolan had his first full week at his new daycare and seems to love it.
The elections are over and we had changes in some positions.
The Bluegrass Aging Consortium met for the first time with the new Chair and committee chairs. Big turnout.
The Health Club for Seniors learned that zoning was not appropriate for the property that looked so promising. More on that to come.
We also learned that an investor might be interested in 110 Ferndale Pass for the purpose of leasing to us.
And there is a property on South Broadway for lease but we have not looked at it yet. Just checked the PVA website and even though we were told by a person representing the property that the zoning is appropriate for our purposes, we are not seeing it shown there. I emailed a city planner but have not heard back yet.
There is also a change to the Livable Lexington Survey. The deadline to fill it out is the end of November, not December as it said in the paper. And it is for all ages to fill out. After all, even the young will be old someday. We all have a stake in aging well in our communities. A community that is kind to older folks is kind to all, studies have found.
So, if you haven’t already filled out the survey, please do so soon. The website is: http://surveymonkey.com/s/livablelexington
The Next Best Year’s Conference was held on Friday, as was the HealthWatch USA Conference for Transparency and Patient Advocacy in Healthcare, and the Mayor’s Senior Services Commission monthly meeting. I went to all three, but wished I had more time at both the conferences.
Last but not least, I was asked to be vice president of our garden club. I do love our garden club. And I love gardening. I emptied out my sunroom/greenhouse last week to insulate it with a foam carpet pad and carpet so it can be heated this winter. I have always wanted to grow tropical fruits in there. So far I have a Meyer lemon tree and two pineapple plants. The lemon tree is infested with scale insects though, and it is a constant battle with insecticidal soap to get rid of them. I have hope that the tree will win the battle and produce those delicious lemons once again!
On the 3rd of November I asked for ideas for ways to spend the money that is in the Civil Monetary Penalty Fund to improve the lives of people who live in nursing homes. So far, no one has contacted me. I am wondering if organizing club meetings of interest (such as gardening clubs, book reading clubs, chess clubs, etc.) to nursing home residents might be appreciated and helpful to the residents?
May you all have a blessed week. God is good!
